All in the Chains

Moses must have thought that YHVH would send him to destroy the nation of Moab. After all, they were the ones who were behind the Midianites to destroy the nation of Israel. Their daughters were sent to seduce the Hebrew men and lead them into idolatry. If Moses was instructed to avenge Israel of the Midianites, surely the same was to apply to the Moabites. However, YHVH said no. Why? They were to be spared because of Ruth, the Moabite, who would later descend from this nation. She would be the matriarch of the Hebrew nation’s Davidic monarchy. How are we to understand this?

One Rabbi has the following explanation. A person who has a pocket watch invariably attaches it to himself by a chain. We all use key chains the same way. The chain attaches the key to us. Although there is no actual use for the chain itself, it becomes a necessity if one wants to make sure that he does not lose the watch or the key. The only significance the chain has is its function as an attachment. This concept holds true for human links in the chain of life. They are there for one purpose, to secure the ancestry of certain people. From Adam and Eve to the return of Yeshua, have been thousands of generations and millions of people, all links in the chain. They are all attached together for one reason, to connect the past with the future. It is therefore quite possible there have been individuals, families, and even generations that have not been worthy to stand on their own merit. Yet they stand on being the necessary link in the chain of generations. Perhaps this is what YHVH told Moses.

You think that Moab has no value and should be wiped out entirely, especially after the grave sin they did to Israel. But then where would Ruth come from? If there were no Moabites, there would be no Ruth. Moab will be allowed to live so that Ruth will descend from them, and she will be the matriarch of monarchs. It may also answer the age old question, why do the wicked prosper? With the above understanding, we see that in some cases they are part of the chain that can only continue through their existence. The wicked could not survive if they had to stand on their merit and their merit alone. But YHVH allows them to survive and prosper, sometimes, for “our” benefit. The scripture says, the wealth of the wicked is laid up for the righteous. Personally, I say, let them survive. As a matter of fact, let them work all they want. Let them work all that overtime and skimp and save. Then in the end, they’ll have to turn it all over to us. You know “us”, the believers who trust in YHVH and refuse to work on Shabbat. Those so called crazy ones who put YHVH above everything else. If I’m going to be “linked” to a bunch of unbelievers, at least let them be workaholics. I would say, everything is all in the “genes”, but in this case, I think YHVH is showing us that sometimes it may all be in the “chains.” Shalom-Shalom.
