Forsaking Your Well Being |
| As we open
up this week’s Parashah (Deu. 3:23-7:11), we read where Moshe is
retelling how he pleaded with YHVH to be able to enter the Promised
Land. Well we all know that didn’t happen, so he begins to warn Israel
once again to keep YHVH’S commandments after they get into the land.
He rehearses before them how other nations will look at them and think
of them as a wise and understanding people, so long as they walk (halakah)
in YHVH’S Torah. Others will be amazed at their nation. He instructs
them to teach these things to their children and grandchildren. How good
are we at doing that now? We’re much better at teaching them man-made
New Testament doctrines and just a few Old Testament stories.
Then Moses goes back in time again to when they were receiving the Torah at Mount Horev. In Chapter four, verse eleven, it says, “And you came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire to the midst of Shamayim, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.” What is interesting here is, most translations have “under” the mountain. It is said in the Mishna the mountain actually raised up off the ground. That’s when the hair on the back of their necks raised up along with itJ . When the mountain burned with fire, what is fire, the Torah. The Hebrews call it black fire on white fire. Next, the word midst is really the word heart (Strongs 3820) here. Who is the heart of the Shamayim (Heavens, Salvation), Yeshua. So you could say here, the mountain burned with Torah to the heart of Yeshua in the Heavens. Using this analogy, you could say verse twelve would read, And YHVH spoke to you out of the heart of Yeshua (Torah). Also notice in verse twelve, it clearly states they heard the voice of the words (word = Yeshua), but saw no likeness. It even repeats it again in the same verse they only heard a voice. Why is this important? We’ve heard a lot about not making any likeness of a man or an animal, or a bird, or etc. as being against Torah. But here I noticed that once again in verse fifteen you’ll see it stated, “take heed to yourselves, for you saw no manner of form on the day YHVH spoke to you out of the midst of the fire LEST ( lest meaning because) you corrupt yourselves and make a graven image.” Moshe is saying this is why YHVH would not appear in any form to you. It was because whatever form He appeared to them in, that would have been the form they would have made an image of and worshiped it in the future. They had just come out of a land full of every kind of image and idol you could dream up. If YHVH had appeared as a butterfly, I believe it would not have been long until you would have seen butterfly statues and people bowing down to them. So He chose not to appear in ANY VISIBLE form to avoid this. But YHVH knows how we are, so he knew on down the line people would still pollute themselves with idols. At least they would not be able to say they were worshipping that object because that was how He appeared to them at Mount Sinai. In verse twenty seven of Chapter four, it says that YHVH will scatter you among the nations. Here you see the foretelling of the scattering of the House of Israel into all the nations. Notice it says they will be scattered wherever YHVH shall lead them. So you are where you are because that’s where YHVH put you! If YHVH had meant for you to be in Israel, you would be there. Bloom where you’re planted and if you can’t bloom, at least budJ . But now He’s beginning to regather His people back to a correct halacha (walk) with their Messiah and his Torah! You will see one statement repeated over and over again in this parashah. That is the statement from YHVH that instructs the people to keep his mitzvoth, and His chukim, that it might be well for them AND for their children. Once again, does how we live our lives effect our children’s lives, absolutely, it plainly tells you this in the Word. If anyone read this parashah (portion) of scripture, you would have to hire someone to help you misunderstand that fact. But then again most people get that misinformation free from the pulpits across the land every week. We are told this walk is only a “me” thing and what I do only comes back to haunt “me.” Not true, it can haunt your kids too! In Chapter five of Deuteronomy, we find the Ten Commandments listed. Here we see the scriptures refer again to making any graven images. It says not to make any “graven images”, a graven image is a “carved out” statue. When people quote this as a proof text not to have a rabbit in your yard or something, they never finish out the rest of the idea conveyed here. It states in the next verse that you shall not bow down to them (the graven images). As a matter of fact, after it says not to make these graven images in verse 8, there is not a period, which would indicate the end of an idea. So that tells me I should continue reading to get the complete meaning of the thought being put forth here. Too many times people pull out one verse of scripture and build an entire doctrine out of it. A lot of Jewish people will not allow their picture taken based entirely on this passage. Now there are varying opinions as to how the Ten Commandments are to be divided up, believe it or not. Some believe that Deuteronomy 5:6 which says, I am YHVH your Elohim is the first commandment, period. Then verse seven would begin the second commandment. Others think verse 6 and 7 combine to make up the first commandment, with verse 8 beginning the second. I believe the Jewish people lean to making 5:6 as being the first commandment. Christianity holds the second opinion. Now my opinion (which I’m always glad to give) is that verse 5:6 is a statement, not a command and does not begin the Ten Commandments. So once again man has his doctrinal issues with one another. In some instances Judaism is right and in some cases Christianity is right. Sometimes they are both wrong! In Chapter six verse seven, YHVH instructs His people to teach all these things they have been instructed to their children. They/we are to talk about them while sitting in our homes and when we lie down and when we get up. In verse eight it says to bind them for a sign upon your hand and they shall be frontlets between your eyes. This of course is where the Jewish people believe they are literally commanded to wrap Tefillin around their hand, and arm while reciting certain prayers. The frontlets are the little black boxes they wear on their forehead while praying that contain certain passages of scripture in them. Verse nine says you shall write them upon the posts of your house and on your gates. Here we have the command for the mezuzah that is put on the inside frame of the door. These also contain certain scriptures and are made of wood or metal. They have the Hebrew letter Shin on them which stands for YHVH. Some Jewish people have one in every doorway of their house and in every door of their car. You could also look at that command in another light. What is your body, but the house where your Spirit resides or your temple? So when you write them upon your house, you write them on your heart, which is in your house (body). When you write them before your gates, what are your gates? You have an eye gate, an ear gate, and a mouth gate. So you put them on your gates by putting the Torah before your eyes, listening to His words, and speaking only in agreement with Him. This portion basically ends with YHVH telling the people when they are in the land they are not to make any covenants with the people there, nor show them any mercy. They are to destroy them. Not only that, don’t even think of marrying one of them. Dark has no ties with light. We go out as Messianics and marry someone walking another walk and wonder why things fall apart. If you marry anyone, you’d better be sure you both are in agreement in your beliefs on how you will walk out your spiritual lives together. As a Messianic you are a special and chosen person for this time in life, that doesn’t mean you are “above” anyone else, but you are called to walk a different walk. Just as Moses time and again pointed out to the people how they were a special and chosen people that YHVH brought out of Egypt, we are a special people called out of today’s Egypt. We are to act differently, eat differently, think differently, and keep different feasts. To do otherwise would be to forsake your well being! Shalom! |
