It
seems that not much emphasis
today is put on spiritual
problems effecting us physically.
However, it is the spirit
that lifts up the body,
not the other way around.
So if the spirit is sick,
what will lift up the physical?
Shlomo HaMelech, (Solomon
the King) says in proverbs
17:22, that a happy heart
makes for good health. What
makes a happy heart then?
To be happy you must be
spiritually healthy. To
stay spiritually healthy,
you must stay in your Word.
Let’s look at one of David’s
statements in the book of
Psalms. Melech David said:
“My eye deteriorated from
anger.” Let’s take a closer
look at that statement.
The Sages say that anger
is manifested through the
liver.
Further
insight into the connection
between your eyes, liver,
and anger can be found in
the book, Sefer Yetzirah.
It also has some things
to say on how the constellations
correspond to parts of the
body. Capricorn just happens
to be the one that corresponds
to the liver and the moral
attribute of Capricorn is
anger. Chinese medicine
also notes the connection
between the eye and the
liver. Have you noticed
that jaundice, a disease
of the liver, shows up in
the eyes? In the English
language someone who is
irritable is said to have
a “jaundiced” disposition
or “bilious.” In fact, the
word “bile” has two meanings:
the fluid produced by the
liver; and (2) anger. In
Hebrew the word anger can
be broken up in two parts.
The first part means, “to
cover” and the second part
means “the eye.”
Both
spiritually and physically
speaking, anger can cause
one’s ability to be clouded
in perceiving his surroundings.
Anger can isolate a person
and create a barrier that
is almost impossible to
get through. Anger takes
away your joy. It causes
you to see things in situations
that are always negative.
It is said that the eyes
are the windows of the soul.
Is anger worth putting a
stumbling block in your
physical health for? Sometimes,
we need to look at our spiritual
condition when we are wondering
what’s wrong with our physical
one. Actually, the realization
that one’s spiritual condition
effects one physically,
is the basic principle of
psychosomatic medicine.
So we see anger certainly
won’t turn your brown eyes
blue, but it will turn everything
in your life a dingy gray!
