There Hung the Name

The words in If we only look we can see patterns everywhere in the natural of the spiritual. YHVH left these patterns here for us to learn about Him. As for me, I need a pattern to go by to sew a button on. But let’s take a look at one pattern we can see in the eye. The eye has different layers. The outer layer is called the sclera and probably the simplest of all, so it would represent the Peshat level of scripture. The middle layer is called the choroid. Here is where the blood vessels, veins, and arteries are. This would be the Remez level. Here we see the Remez in the relationship from the blood vessels and arteries carrying nourishment to the tissues, while the veins carry the waste away.

So the blood vessels relate to the arteries, which in turn relate to the veins. Remez-one thing relates to another. In the inner most layer of the eye you have what is called rods, they contain receiving nerves for light and dark. Here you have the drash level. Is there light or dark, and to what degree? It would seem these rods would represent the “letter of the law.” It’s done by little ganglion cells that act like telephone lines sending messages back and forth. There’s another group of cells called cones. They can tell light from dark “and” color, each color being specific to its task. These cells would be the “Oral Traditions” of the Torah. Also the lens of the eye goes in the Drash category as it studies the world picking out the details for consideration and focusing on them to get a clearer image.

The eye has a window called the iris which you would say narrows the way, or in spiritual terms, limits the halachah (your walk). It reminds you of the Temple windows that were small on the outside and large on the inside. They were made this way to let the light (Torah) of YHVH out and restrict the light that came in. The iris of the eye opens wider to darkness, trying to find acceptable light to let in, thereby “restricting” which light comes in. Then we have the retina. It turns light into meaningful patterns or visual information from the world around us. Here is your Sod level. When your walk gets deep enough in Torah, you see meaningful patterns you never saw before which help you walk a better walk (halachah). So just look for YHVH’S patterns all around you, especially in the mirror because the “eyes” have it!
