Huge
biotechnology companies are tampering with and altering the genetic
codes of our foods. It’s called GMO’S for short and stands for
Genetically modified organisms. It seems these companies may be
determined to eventually convert the entire world’s food supply
into genetically modified crops. In a book entitled, Genetic Engineering
- Dream or Nightmare, it says these GMO’S are more dangerous to
us than nuclear weapons. The reason is these genes replicate indefinately,
spread and recombine. Sadly, the average person has little say
about it. Most people aren’t even aware of it! More than 68% of
the soybeans, 69% of the cotton, and 26% of the corn being grown
in America this year contains these GMO’S. In USA Today in the
July 10th issue it states that genetically engineered crops are
so popular with US farmers that they will actually exceed levels
the government predicted earlier this year. But that’s not all.
If the GMO’S end up in our corn, they end up in all the products
made from corn, such as corn syrup, corn meal, corn starch, corn
oil, and so you get the picture. There is just about 100% certainty
that we are already eating some form of these GMO’S on almost
a daily basis.
Then
we have another area to
look at, vitamin supplements.
In the February issue of
Whole Foods Magazine it
states that GMO’S in dietary
supplements may be greater
than people realize. Well
if 68% of the soybeans are
being modified, and the
big push is on for soy products
right now, what would we
expect? Do the math. By
the way, a large percentage
of the vitamin E being sold
today is derived from soybeans.
So here we are taking supplements
to help us in the lack of
food nutrients, and the
supplements are probably
poisoning us just as much
as the food! A bit ironic
isn’t it? Well can’t we
just read the labels and
avoid these GMO’S, you ask?
That’s a good thought but
it doesn’t work. First of
all, there is no mandatory
labeling law, so you’re
probably ingesting them
whether you know it or not.
There a few companies who
are beginning to use GMO
free labels. But as of now
laws are being considered
which would prohibit any
such labels being used.
Sadly enough rumor has it
that’s it’s going to pass
real soon. Genetically modified
wheat seems to be the next
product they want to experiment
with.
CBS
news reported on July 14th
that modified wheat was
coming to Canada whether
the farmers there wanted
it or not. The current controversy
is over secrecy. It seems
that the companies Monsanto
Canada and Syngenta do not
want to reveal the whereabouts
of 50 test sites across
Canada. The farmers are
worried that the modified
wheat pollen may become
wind-borne and cross pollinate
with their crops. Then we
have rice being genetically
combined with human protein
out in the fields of California’s
traditional rice growing
region. The two human proteins
they are using are lactoferrin
and lysozyme. Only God knows
what will happen with that
experiment. The one GMO
that may be somewhat known
about is the starlink corn
story.
According
to a story in the September
4th issue of the New York
Times, this starlink corn
may not have came as a surprise
to the government or to
the company (Aventis). It
seems both had some indication
that the corn might be entering
the human food supply more
than six months before it
was discovered in taco shells.
So what can we do? Well,
really only a couple of
things. The first thing
is to be educated on what
GMO’S are and stay alert
as much as possible as to
their progress in getting
into our food. The next
thing is to get a closer
walk with the Lord. If the
worse case scenario should
happen, He’s the only one
that you’re going to be
able to count on. You can’t
depend on our government
to protect you, or your
neighbor, or even your good
friend. They’re messing
with our meat and now with
our crops. If rocky times
are ahead, you’d better
be sure you have a piece
of the “Rock”, and I don’t
mean Prudential for your
insurance needs either!
